About the Eclipse

On Monday, August 21 (weather permitting) a total eclipse of the sun will be visible in certain parts of the United States. This rare alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth is a historic event due to its rarity.

Although the total eclipse will not occur here in Monmouth County, we will be treated to a partial eclipse that will begin at 1:22 PM and end at 4 PM. The peak will occur at 2:45 PM, which is the point at which maximum coverage of the sun will occcur. This video shows you what you can expect. Of course, we’re going to need clear skies to see it clearly.

How to View the Eclipse Safely

Regarding safe viewing of the partial eclipse, the National Weather Service advises:

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun. To date four manufacturers have certified that their eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.
